They were looking up and down the road nervously, then decided to climb over the bank of snow left by the snowplow to plunge into the narrow wetlands behind the house. Below are a couple of photos that my husband snapped of them as they lumbered by.
The event included men's and women's ski and snowboard superpipe and slopestyle events as well as an evening streetstyle event downtown on a collection of street features under the lights on Washington Street. I did watch two on-mountain events as well as the streetstyle one, the women's and men's snowboard superpipe finals.

I was especially impressed by 14-year-old Chloe Kim, who took second place in the women's event, only a half point behind Olympic gold medal winner and veteran snowboarder Kelly Clark, who took first. I'm sure Chloe Kim will be one to watch in the 2018 Winter Olympics. I was pleased as punch when she agreed to pose for a photo with me right after she nailed her second place run (see below). Below that is a photo of the top three women in the event on the podium (from left to right), Chloe Kim, second, Kelly Clark, first, and Arielle Gold, third.
A surprise review for A Basket of Trouble, the third and latest book in
my Claire Hanover gift basket designer series, appeared in the Summit Daily News today. A quote from the review states: "Fans of Groundwater's writing should be thrilled." I'm thrilled, too!Beth Groundwaterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13999372882748655834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28839948.post-74910390467503335662014-10-22T08:00:00.000-06:002014-10-22T08:00:05.601-06:00Gondola EvacuationAbout a week and a half ago, my husband and I joined about 150 other volunteers to help the Breckenridge Mountain ski patrollers practice evacuating people (and dogs and kids) from gondola cars, in case of breakdown. We lined up at 8:30 AM to sign waivers, eat donuts, and get assigned to groups of 4-5 people per gondola car. Then we loaded into the cars, were sent up the mountain, and the lift attendants stopped the gondola when we were all in place. Then we waited while ski patrollers climbed up the nearest up hill tower then worked their way down the cable to the gondola cars below that tower. Our car was the third one evacuated by our team of patrollers. We were suspended above the Cucumber Gulch wetlands in the Breckenridge Nordic Center grounds.

In the first photo below, a ski patroller is standing on top of the gondola car uphill of us. He has finished evacuating that car, is hooked onto the gondola cable, and is about to slide down that cable to our car. In the second photo, I'm being lowered to the ground in the "diaper". The last two photos show my husband being lowered.
My husband went up and took some photos of the large critters, and I'm sharing them below. Along with black bears, mountain lions, coyotes, and foxes, they're just some of the wildlife that we share our town and its environs with.
Some of the trees are over 1000 years old. As you can see from the photos below, Windy Ridge lives up to it's name. The force of the winds has bent the trees over. The wind even made it hard to walk straight!
It's about a 3 hour round-trip. Once was a scouting hike with my husband and a neighbor couple to make sure I knew where it was. The second time, a week later, I led six other members of my Women With Altitude hiking group up to the cabin. And the latest time was a few days ago with a neighbor friend after a snowfall the night before. Below are some photos of the last trip. I now feel qualified to lead this hike anytime!
My husband and I had a blast, going our separate ways and meeting for parties. We wanted to see different films, and he was a Film Liaison volunteer, so he had to introduce his filmmakers' films. I, on the other hand, was interested in meeting as many Short Drama filmmakers as possible, to let them know I was responsible for selecting their films (as Short Drama lead on the Program Committee) and to tell them how much I enjoyed their films.

The festival kicked off Thursday evening with three parties and a film: The Filmmaker Welcome Party at The Warming Hut, the VIP Party at the Riverwalk Center, the Opening Night Film, It's Not You, It's Me, and a late Opening Night Party at the River Mountain Lodge. The first photo below is me with Robb Woulfe, CEO of Cultural Arts of the town of Breckenridge, and his wife at the VIP Party. The second is of me with hubby and friends at the Opening Night Party.

Friday, I went to see the High School films in the afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by the creativity shown by these young filmmakers. After the late afternoon Industry Party at Montana's Cantina, I watched the Adventure Reel of high-energy, outdoor action sports and exploration films, headlined by Roraima -- Climbers of the Lost World, then went to the late night Official After Party at Cecilia's Martini Bar and Nightclub.

Saturday afternoon, I sat through all three Filmmaker Forum panels of 8-9 filmmakers each, then chatted with those I wanted to meet after each panel. Then I watched a full-length slapstick comedy film set in Turkey, Dugan Dernek. After a quick sandwich at The Crown Cafe, I watched the second half of the Adventure Reel selections at the Riverwalk Center, headlined by Higher, an extreme backcountry snowboarding movie. Then I attended the Blue Stag Saloon Party to "come down" from the adrenaline high produced by the Adventure Reel. The photo below shows my husband and me with Town Council member Erin Gigliello at the party.

I spent Sunday running from one overlapping film to another, starting with Flying the Feathered Edge, a documentary of aviation legend Bob Hoover's life. I left before the final minutes of this excellent film to catch a showing of BFFs, a full-length comedy about two women friends going to a couples retreat. Then I ran over to a showing of Life Itself, a documentary about film critic Roger Ebert. I missed the first half hour of the film, but the rest was wonderful!
Hubby and I had a quick dinner at Rita's, then we watched the Awards Ceremony followed by Una Vida, the Closing Night film. It is a drama about Alzheimer's disease that is set in New Orleans. Finally, we went to the Wrap Party at the Blue River Bistro. The photo below shows us with other partiers, including the Emma movie filmmaker, an enthusiastic young man who starred in his film and won our Best Actor award.
Last Wednesday, I<span class="userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}"> had
my last bike ride of the season with the No Name Group--last ride
for them, but not for me. I hope to be riding through the end of the
month. We biked from Frisco to Keystone and back, with lovely views of
gold, peach, and rose-colored aspens under a blue, blue sky with temps
in the sixties. A perfect day for riding! The photos below were taken by Dick Candlemo.
This year, the beneficiary was the National Repertory Orchestra. Since the NRO Director of Marketing and Development knows us as steadfast supporters and volunteers, she asked if we would be willing to be judges. We were happy to oblige, and since many of the teams were dressing in costume, we decided to wear our Viking horn hats that we had decorated for Breckenridge's annual winter Ullr Festival (Ullr is the Norse god of snow). You can see us at our posts below.
Then last Saturday was Summit County's Make A Difference Day. We celebrate it early, because in October, we're likely to have snow that would get in the way of accomplishing outdoor projects. My husband and I volunteered to do some trail building work with the Friends of the Breckenridge Trails. We worked on adding a new section to the ZL Trail to connect it to the Galena Ditch Trail. The photo below shows me taking a break from wielding such tools as a McLeod, a Pulaski, and a shovel to create the new trail.
By hosting a start or finish, a town or city turns it into an all-day event, with vendor booths and side competitions or demonstrations. So, along with watching the racers come through town, we shopped the vendor booths and entered their contests and observed the pond crossing contest and a stunt bike performance. We also listened to the free Big Head Todd and the Monsters concert at the Riverwalk Center that evening for awhile before walking home. Below are a few photos from the fun day.

The first three photos from the pond crossing contest are from Sharon Trombore. Hubby and I are in the last photo. Competitors tried to bike across a six inch wide wooden plank bridge to get to the other side of the Dredge Pond without falling in the very cold water. As can be seen in the middle photo, one young man even tried it on a unicycle. The winners primarily were local midde-school aged kids.
Anyway, I took a day off from fun today to do chores and errands (and it rained this morning anyway). So, here are some photos of an August 8th "Women With Altitude" hike to Shrine Pass, above the rest area at the top of Vail Pass in Colorado. Even though it was a little late in the season, the wildflowers were still spectacular, as were the views. A beautiful day!
One of the rental homes had their trash can stowed in a shed behind the garage that had a flimsy plywood door with no lock, and the bear figured out how to get in. Neighbors watched as the bear systematically dragged one plastic bag at a time out of the trash can onto the lawn, ripped it open and ate anything remotely edible inside. After a big meal, the bear went for a swim in a nearby pond and lumbered off.

Meanwhile the yard maintenance crew working in the area changed their schedule to work on the other side neighborhood to stay well out of the bear's way. Once it was gone, the crew cleaned up the mess. The rental company was notified, as were the current renters. They moved the trash can into the garage, and the shed will be rebuilt stronger and with a bearproof lock. The bear, in the meantime, was spotted the next day swimming in the pond again, probably after reconnoitering the area, looking for more easy food pickings. We all hope our neighbors are keeping their trash secure, because while it was a beautiful and magnificent animal, we prefer the bear stick to wild food and move out of neighborhood.

Here are some photos my husband took of the bear--with a telephoto lens, of course. In the first photo, that's a large hot tub behind the bear, which gives you an idea of its size.
Photographer Stanley Stansfield sent some photos of the event to the National Ski Club Newsletter, and they published a two-page spread in their May newsletter. The article includes a photo of me with arms outstretched celebrating my Gold (first place in my age class, and second place overall) finish in the Short Snowshoe Race of the games. I'm tagged as "an exuberant Beth Groundwater." :-) You can see the photo on Page 15 of the PDF file, which is page 28 of the newsletter HERE. Member Linda Carr shared some of the beautiful photos she took that morning, and I'll share a couple with you below. The trail is a 3 1/2 mile up-and-back, with about 700' elevation gain. It starts at the old railroad section house at the top of Boreas Pass near Breckenridge, Colorado, and follows a stream drainage ditch to the saddle between Boreas Mt. and Mt. Baldy that overlooks South Park County. In the photos below, I'm in front of the group, wearing a light green cowboyish hat. The photos don't do justice to the multitude of wildflowers along the way, but they show some of the views we enjoyed.
Georgetown has over 200 Victorian buildings remaining from its silver mining heydays, and the town is very active in preserving and presenting these properties to appreciative tourists. Some of the sites I visited are shown below.

The first photo is of "The Bride's House" in which fellow Colorado author Sandra Dallas lives, and where she signed copies of her latest book release by the same name. The Gothic Revival home was lovingly restored inside.
The third photo is of Hotel de Paris, built in 1875 by Frenchman Louis Dupuy as a luxury hotel with steam heat, gas lights, and hot and cold running water. Currently run as a museum, almost all of the original room decorations, furnishings, and fixtures are still in place. I especially enjoyed the kitchen, complete with a photo of the Chinese cook who toiled there.
The next photo of a fireman's uniform is from the Alpine Hose No. 2 Firehouse and Tower, built in 1875. I also enjoyed the silver trophy case and the photos of the strapping young men who pulled fire carts in firehouse races that were hotly contested in Colorado at the time.
To finish off the day, our group gathered at the Dusty Rose Tea Room for a delicious Victorian-style tea. The tea room includes a wall of hats that patrons can don for photos and to "get in the mood" while dining. We took full advantage of them, as you can see in the next to last photo. The last photo shows my "Afternoon Tea" plate, with the deviled egg quarters and one cucumber sandwich missing that I had already eaten. :) What a fun day!
When we lived in Colorado Springs, for instance, I occasionally met with the teen writing group at the local library to pass on information, such as how to write a query letter, and to help them critique each other's writing. Also, Neil was a volunteer science fair judge. So, when the Summit County Library System initiated it's "Fizz Boom Read!!" summer reading program this year to encourage children to both read and explore science, we were happy to sign up as volunteers. On July 9th, we manned two of ten science stations at the Frisco library that engaged children in experiments with air pressure.

You can see a lot of photos from that day HERE, but I borrowed a few photos from the site that featured Neil or myself to share with my blog readers. In the first photo below, two smart young gals who previously had manned the marshmallow experiment station at another library location are explaining to me how the experiment works while I read the instructions. In the second photo, we're running the experiment with some excited kids (notice the plunger for demonstrating a vacuum). Other people save up their money to spend vacations here, while I get to enjoy the outdoor recreation opportunities here year-round.

On Tuesday this week, I hiked with the SOB's (Summit Older Bushwackers) to Booth Falls in East Vail. The hike was a workout--1400 feet altitude gain and 4.6 miles round trip, but the falls were spectacular, as was the rest of the scenery. See the two photos below:

And today was a great day for a bike ride--sunny with temperatures in the 60s and low 70s! We rode from Frisco to Copper for the ribbon cutting of the new trail section there with our county commissioners and other dignitaries, TV and print media, and lots of other bicyclists. Then we continued to the top of Vail Pass and back (about 28 miles total, I think) and finished with a group lunch at Whole Foods. The photo below is of me and my husband at the top of Vail Pass. Notice that he made the ride on a mountain bike, which is much heavier than my road bike.
Tomorrow, we'll watch the 4th of July parade and enjoy other festivities in downtown Breckenridge, host a cookout at our house, then watch the fireworks. Happy 4th of July, everyone!Beth Groundwaterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13999372882748655834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28839948.post-71823685545284653472014-06-26T14:55:00.000-06:002014-06-26T14:55:14.891-06:00Mouth-watering NewsI just got word that my recipe for "Tarragon-Raspberry Flank Steak with Carmelized Onions, Kale and Mango Salsa" was accepted for inclusion in the upcoming Mystery Writers of America publication, A Mystery Lover's Cookbook. I submitted it months ago and had forgotten all about it. So, one more small publication credit coming up!Beth Groundwaterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13999372882748655834noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28839948.post-66047050873204745002014-06-18T14:45:00.000-06:002014-06-18T14:45:03.121-06:00Bicycling in Summit County, ColoradoWe have had gorgeous weather for bicycling in Summit County, Colorado, this June. This past Monday, my husband and I went on a ride with the No Name Bike Group from the Senior Center in Frisco to the Inxpot in Keystone for a coffee break, then back again. Dick Candelmo took some photos of the group and shared them with us.

The first photo below is of most of the group, stopping at an interpretive sign in the wetlands area near Frisco. I'm in the second photo, and my husband Neil is in the middle of the third one. The water in the background is the Dillon reservoir. The only somewhat negative part of of the ride was the strong headwind on the Dillon dam road and for the rest of the return ride that made us work harder.
