Action Shots from the Summit County Senior Winter Games
On February 22nd, I blogged about participating in the Summit County Senior Winter Games. Tim Orwick, the event photographer, recently made available to the participants all the action shots he took of us during the games. I selected three to share with my blog readers. The first photo below is of me in the giant slalom race that occurred during a snowstorm, which is why I have my hood up.

Summit County Senior Winter Games
As those of you know who follow me on Facebook, I competed in four events of the Summit County 2013 50+ Open Winter Games. The Games offered many different kinds of winter sports events, including figure and speed skating, hockey puck shoot, nordic and alpine skiing, snowball throw, snowshoeing and a biathalon. I entered three alpine skiing events, the Giant Slalom, Rally Race (where you try to match a time), and the Obstacle Course, and I entered the Short Snowshoe Race (about 1 km). The photo below is of me primed for the snowshoe race.
The medal count for the Summit County Senior Winter Games is sky high, because they award gold, silver, and bronze for each event for men and women separately for every 5-year age group. It's like kindergarten! Anyway, I earned a medal in every event I entered. Gold for the Short Snowshoe Race, where I was the fastest woman OVERALL, silver for the Giant Slalom and Rally Race and bronze for the Obstacle Course (got to work on my backward skiing speed). The award ceremony/party was a lot of fun. The photo below is of me and my husband with our medals.
I will admit that I was also the youngest woman in the short snowshoe race. But there are some really athletic seniors in their 70s here that I huff and puff to keep up with on my summer hikes and winter snowshoe excursions. The oldest woman competing in the games is 86, and the only woman in her age category (85 - 89). She entered LOTS of events, and her neck was weighed down with gold medals by the end of the award ceremony. Gals like her are my role models!

Opening Day at Breckenridge Ski Resort
Last Friday, November 9th, was the opening day for the Breckenridge Ski Resort, and my husband and I were there to join in the festivities. We arrived early to make sure we got our free cinnamon rolls, then rode up the Colorado Chair to take our first of five runs on the Springmeier trail. At the top of the chair, I had my photo taken with Ullr, the Norse god of snow and winter, who was out having a fun time hanging out with the early skiing enthusiasts.
Then we headed for the T-Bar at the base of Peak 8, for a split of Veuve Clicquot champagne, which was on sale for a deeply discounted price to celebrate the opening. My husband and I had our photo take with the Veuve Clicquot promotion girls, whose jackets are the same color as the labels for their champagne bottles. (Notice Ullr in the background!) It was a fun half day all around and a great way to open the season!

Summit County Senior Winter Games
Earlier this week I participated in the Summit County Senior Winter Games, an annual affair that attracts seniors not only from the Colorado high country, but from all over the US. The friendly competition began with a spaghetti dinner at the Summit County Senior Center on Sunday evening, where we registered for events and picked up our racing bibs. We also bid on silent auction items, and the proceeds benefited needy seniors in the county.
Also, there were door prizes galore from generous sponsors. I won a performance tune from Keystone Sports on my skis, which was very timely, since I've been hitting rocks on the slopes all season so far, due to lower snowpack levels. After carbo- and wine-loading, we all went home to psych ourselves up for the ice-skating events at Keystone Lake (which I didn't participate in) and the alpine skiing events at Keystone Resort on Monday.
I competed in the Giant Slalom (that was also a Nastar event), the Rally Race (where we try to match a time set by a games official), and the goofy Obstacle Race. Below is a photo of me in my race bib, free-skiing between events.
Tuesday was a full morning and early afternoon of nordic events at the Frisco Nordic Center. I competed in the short, 1 kilometer snowshow race there. Then at 3:00 that afternoon, we reconvened for more food and wine and the long, long award ceremonies. Why so long? For every event, competitors were divided by sex and 5-year age groups (A=50-54, B=55-59, etc.), and gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded for each group.
I won a bronze medal in the alpine Obstacle Course Race and a silver medal in the Short Snowshoe Race and a silver Nastar medal in the Giant Slalom Race. Below is a photo of me with my "bling." The Senior Winter Games were a great way to get us "seniors" (50+) outside and moving and were a lot of fun to boot!

A Skiing Easter in Breckenridge
Last week, I had three book promotion events on Saturday, Sunday, and Thursday, and this Thursday, I leave VERY early in the morning on a 10-day trip back east that will include 9 promotion events. In between, I needed a break from writing and promoting, so I did something completely different--I went skiing. I made some final powder turns for the season and got my legs good and achy during the last three days that the Breckenridge ski resort was open to the public.
Friday, I got back into my ski groove after a three week break since the last time I was on the boards. Saturday, my husband and I skied with friends Arlene and Jay. And, we had our picture taken with the Easter Bunny! In the first photo below, I'm solo with the bunny. In the second photo, my husband is the one with the white beard and dressed in blue.
Sunday, our college-age son came up with a friend of his to snowboard the mountain. I chatted with them briefly at the top of the Imperial Chair, but I didn't meet up with them again until we broke for a late lunch at 1:30 PM. Mom is too slow for these guys (including my husband!). I had one spill, blowing out of both skis in heavy, wet snow on the Boneyard run. There's a reason that black-diamond slope has that name! I managed to collect my gear and get going again, though.
At 2, the luau began on patio outside the T Bar at the base of Peak 8. Free samples of roasted pig, discounted drinks, rocking music, a roaming beach ball, and resort hospitality staff handing out chocolates all added to the festivities. My pina colada in a real coconut hit the spot! Folks came in all sorts of costumes, including Vikings, grass skirts and loud shirts, a banana, Nemo the fish, a penguin, a dog, and of course, lots of bunny ears.
After some libations, the young men hit the terrain park, and my husband and I hit the hot tub back at our Breckenridge home for a much-needed soak. The guys (and a young woman from school they found at the T Bar) joined us for an Easter dinner of ham, yams, broccoli, and homemade chocolate chocolate chip cookies made by my pastry chef son before they got in their cars for the snowy drive back to Denver.
Today, after laundry, cleaning, and catching up on email, we'll head back to Colorado Springs. Refreshed and relaxed, I'll start packing and finalizing plans for my east coast book tour.

A Very Cold Week in Steamboat Springs
I just love living in Colorado! Along with whitewater rafting, hiking, and biking in the summer, I enjoy skiing in the winter. And, I get to write about those activities in my mysteries. Recently my husband and I spent a week in Steamboat Springs with another couple who are long-term, close friends and avid skiers like ourselves.
